How to Boost Your Productivity When Working at Home

productivity-at-home

As many solopreneurs will tell you, working at home definitely has its perks. You don’t have to worry about traffic or commuting. There’s no supervisor, or boss that you have to report to and your office is where you want to make it – in most cases your home.

However, it does have its challenges – the lack of interaction with workmates, not being able to disengage from work as regularly, the many distractions and temptations that come from working at home can make it difficult for an entrepreneur to concentrate and maintain a steady level of productivity when working at home.

When I first started working for myself, I was practically non-existent to my family. I would work 70-80 hour weeks and barely have any time to spend with them. After working for myself for 12-years though, I’ve developed a schedule and some best practices that I follow to make sure that I get everything done – and have plenty of time to spend with my family and doing the things I love most.

Here are some of my tips to help increase your productivity and focus throughout the day in your home office – and believe me, they are all tried, true and tested!

There you have it, those are my tips to being super productive as an entrepreneur who works at home. In case you’re wondering, here’s a quick snapshot of my own home office environment:

And to boost your personal productivity when working at home even more, there’s this additional infographic that’ll help you hack your way through your email inbox!

Remember, it all boils down to self-discipline and making sure that you work smarter and not harder, so you can make the most out of your work day and enjoy the benefits of working at home – it’s not for everyone. But, if you’re committed to becoming a productive, profitable entrepreneur doing your own thing, in your own way… you’ll be on your way to a very happy lifestyle – a lifestyle that I’m personally not giving up anytime soon!

10 Quick Tips to Brand Building Brilliance [Infographic]

If the word “McDonalds” popped up in a conversation, chances are that your brain flashed an image of those distinctive golden arches and maybe a cheeseburger almost immediately. Now if someone offered you a good deal you on a generic laptop, chances are that you would second-guess it. But, if that laptop had a glowing Apple logo on it, however, the story changes completely.

This is the power of good branding, what John Jantsch of Duct Tape Marketing calls “the art of becoming knowable, likable and trustable”.

In an age where social media has developed distinct personalities and “voices” for even the smallest of companies, developing a brand has never been more important. Almost every entrepreneur has a logo, design or persona to help set them apart from everyone else in their niche.

Or, at least they should…!!! Read this post about building an online brand, if you’re a little behind 🙂

Nowadays more than ever, branding is about more than just a good-looking website, or a hip logo. This is where you have to dig deep and find out what your brand is all about.

What is your brand’s story, attributes; it’s personality? What kind of brand experience do you want your audience to have? Once you have all the basics down, it’s time to get to work and start sharing it with the world. Here are a few tips on shaping and building your brand online!

If you’re serious about focusing on brand building and the opportunities that come from building a strong, powerful personal brand then I’d love to invite you to check out my mastermind community, Youpreneur.com. If you decide to become a member, you’ll be joining hundreds of other coaches, bloggers, authors, experts, podcasters, speakers and entrepreneurs that are building profitable, long-term businesses – directly from their personal brands.

It’s the perfect private community, where entrepreneurs from around the world offer feedback, brainstorm ideas, get support and are held accountable in their business building activities – every day! Not to mention all the training (approximately 30-hours currently!) videos and material… It could be just what you need to take everything you’re currently doing to a whole new level.

Remember… building a brand is not a luxury. It’s a requirement to do business in the 21st century. People want to do business with other people. And building that personal brand is the quickest and easiest way to build their ‘know, like and trust’ mentality with your customers.

How to Create a High Converting Optin Offer for Your Website

I have to admit, it’s a pretty exciting time for us entrepreneurs nowadays. There always seems to be a new idea, social media platform or tool to discover, to help us get our brands and businesses heard.

While it’s always a great feeling to work on new ideas and strategies, it’s also important to pull back sometimes and focus on the basics. Namely, making sure that building your email list should still be a top priority. As my good friend Amy Porterfield always says, “the energy of your business is directly tied to the strength of your email list”.

This is where creating a high converting optin offer comes into play. That key piece of content you offer your audience so that you can build your email list. But where do you start and how do you make sure that your lead magnet is strong enough to make it a no-brainer for your visitors to sign-up?

I go into this, and much more in this short video presentation. Watch it below, now.

Creating a high-quality and personalized piece of content takes more than just a quick write-up or recording and uploading it. Do this right, and it’ll pave the way for many months (if not years!) to come.

Take the time to plan and execute it properly, to make sure that you have a strong first impression on offer, to turn those website visitors into life-long fans. Think of it like this… create an optin offer so strong that you could put a price tag of at least a couple of hundred dollars. Then give it away for free.

A perfect companion to this video lesson is for you to listen into Episode 118 of Youpreneur.FM, where I sit down with my good friend and email marketing rockstar, Greg Hickman, to discuss exactly how to build a high-converting email funnel, to maximize every optin you receive. You can also check out this sweet infographic, too.

What did you think of this post? I’d love to hear from you. Please drop me a tweet, or a quick message on my Facebook Page! And, as always, if you know of someone that might benefit from seeing this, please do share it with them – they won’t be mad at you for providing them value. Promise!

How to Organize and Run a Mastermind Session [Infographic]

Sometimes getting caught up in the everyday grind of your business makes it way too easy to fall into a rut. This can lead to missed opportunities, or not being able to see problems the way an outsider can – and it can happen without you even realizing it!

It’s happened to me. Many times – but, not anymore!

Mastermind groups have become such a staple in my entrepreneurial life, and it’s no wonder why that is. Having a core group of peers to help support, inspire and give you that nudge in the right direction can make such a huge difference in how you run and grow your business – it’s honestly changed the way that I’ve built my businesses over the years.

In fact, they’ve made such a remarkable change in my business that I even started an online mastermind community, Youpreneur.com.

This concept has become so important to me, that nowadays I run several mastermind sessions, live, in-person throughout the course of the year – including my Tropical Think Tank event, which is my big annual event in the Philippines! The interaction and energy you get with other like-minded entrepreneurs sharing ideas and experiences is so invaluable. I love it!

There’s no fast success formula to running a successful mastermind group, but just in case you feel like you are ready to jump into hosting your own mastermind then here are some tips to help you get started.

How-to-Organize-&-Run-a-Mastermind-Session-for-the-First-Time-page-001

To further support this infographic, I strongly suggest you listen in on Episode 151 of YoupreneurFM, where I go into a number of other points on the subject of mastermind groups, and why they are so very important to help entrepreneurs grow as individuals, as well as the perfect way to cure the ‘loneliness’ factor that we sometimes feel as entrepreneurs, too.

I also go into detail on how you can create your first one, as well as how to run a mastermind group a lot easier than you might think, as well as how to actually run a mastermind session from afar. It’s a great, quick listen episode that I know you’ll appreciate investing the time listening to.

The Power and Duty of Entrepreneurial Professionalism

entrepreneurial-professionalism

Keep your promises, tell the truth and take responsibility for your mistakes.

Yeah, I know… this sounds like the advice your parents and grandparents repeated to you as a child. Right up there with “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!”, or “Wash your hands before dinner”. However, the reality is that simple wisdom like this has never been more needed in the business world.

Especially within the growing sub-culture of digital entrepreneurs who are building massive audiences with people they’ll probably never meet the majority of in ‘real life’. Never before has there been a generation so connected to others, while simultaneously being self-centered – think about it. And it’s even more important to think about it, if you’re driving change and influence.

We care about trivial things like how many strangers ‘follow’ us and ‘like’ us on social media platforms, while neglecting to be punctual and respectful towards the people we actually know – I’ve had many podcasters invite me on their shows, only to either be late for our appointment, or stand me up… becoming complete no-show’s.

It’s easy to call yourself an Entrepreneur. But can you call yourself a professional?

I believe the answer to that question will separate those that thrive, from those that struggle to get by.

In my opinion, never before has being seen as a professional been more important. Not only because of its ability to form good character, but also because it makes up the very DNA of ‘Professionalism’ – a habit which every entrepreneur has the duty to perform… especially if they wish to become, or remain influential and successful.

What is Entrepreneurial Professionalism?

Well, for starters, being a professional has nothing to do with following items:

  • Having a certain level of education (like a MBA).
  • Making a specific amount of money.
  • Being the best in your industry.
  • Being well known, or famous.

None of that is required to become a professional.

You could have a ‘fruit and veg’ stall in any Central London market and still carry yourself as a professional.

It really boils down to conducting yourself in a way that shows you respect yourself, your business and the people you interact with and serve.

That’s what separates the amateurs from the professionals.

And since this type of behavior has no prerequisites (other than committing to be professional), there’s no reason why every entrepreneur should neglect this habit.

Why Entrepreneurial Professionalism Matters in Today’s New Economy

U.S. labor data is predicting that by the year 2020, over 40% of the U.S. population will either be a full-time freelancer, or involved in some sort of freelancing to supplement their income (study by Intuit 2020 report).

This is the ‘New’ economy many authors and entrepreneurs have been speaking about for years (myself included). A time when men and women have the opportunity to take control of their destiny and build a business. But with this opportunity comes great responsibility.

For anyone with the aspiration to become their own brand and build a business based around that brand and what it stands for, they must embrace professionalism as a way of life.

Why? Because choosing otherwise will only serve to benefit your competitor who does!

It doesn’t matter if you’re just starting out, or if you’ve been in business for years. Every person who wishes to be seen and respected as an influencer in their market, or niche is responsible for being professional.

With this in mind, I formally present to you, five habits you must implement in order to call yourself a professional.

#1 – Professional Entrepreneurs Keep Their Word

This is one of the biggest problems I’ve seen (and experienced) among entrepreneurs. Someone says they’ll do ‘XYZ’ task for you, or call you at a certain time, or send you a specific email, but then cancels last minute or simply flakes out, only to explain a few days later how busy they were.

But here’s the deal, being ‘busy’ is not an excuse for missing deadlines, or not delivering on promises. A professional does whatever it takes to keep their word and fulfil their promises (no matter how small they are). It’s plain common courtesy and it’s something that is slowly disappearing – we’ve got to bring it back as a focus of modern day entrepreneurship.

That means…

  • You may need to pull an all-nighter to finish a project. Yes, I know sleep is important, but a professional would rather lose sleep, then have someone lose confidence in their word. It will also serve as a lesson to yourself to not take on more than you can handle. Losing sleep is not fun, and the groggy feeling you have the next day will remind you to not bite off more than you can chew.
  • You shouldn’t over-promise in order to impress someone, or to make a sale. This is the fastest way to destroy your reputation.
  • You need to start getting into the habit of saying ‘no’ more often. Saying ‘yes’ to everything will fill your plate and boost stress levels. Remember, when you say ‘yes’ to something, you instantly say ‘no’ to something else.

#2 – Professional Entrepreneurs Respect Their Own Time

You’ll find that some of the most successful people have more free time and grow their business faster than people who are always busy. At first glance you may think “When I become successful, I’ll have more time!” but, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

In fact, it’s the other way around… when you free up more time, you’ll become successful. And this only happens by valuing your time.

After all, time IS our most valuable commodity, as entrepreneurs, as I went into detail on in this past post.

When a professional begins valuing their time, it means they’ll begin making changes in how their manage their time, as well as making the most out of the time they have each day. For example:

  • Saying ‘yes’ to only high impact activities and projects (this requires more long-term thinking).
  • Preparing, or requiring an agenda for any meetings they take on.
  • Charging what their time is worth – and not feeling bad about it.
  • Saying goodbye to multitasking, instead focusing on building a team.
  • Being super punctual for appointments.
  • Identifying and distancing themselves from time vampires, such as people who want to ‘pick your brain’.

#3 – Professional Entrepreneurs Remain Cool Under Pressure

There are two things I can 100% guarantee. The first is that the sun will rise tomorrow morning. And the second is that you will face trials and setbacks in business.

J Paul Getty, one of the richest men who ever lived gave the following advice in his book “How To Be Rich”:

“The successful businessman – the true business leader – is the individual who develops the ability to retain his composure in times of stress and in the face of setbacks!”

Maintaining composure not only gives you the ability to make better decisions, but it also sets a proper example to your family, staff and anyone you do business with.

This is a habit you must begin implementing immediately. It might not come naturally to you, but I have seen great strides in people that I’ve worked with, just because they focused in on this as a habit that they were passionate about forming and developing.

#4 – Professional Entrepreneurs ‘Own’ Their Mistakes

No matter how professional you are, you will make mistakes.

I embrace screwing up! Sincerely. It’s a learning game that I have no problem playing. I chase down opportunities to learn, by making mistakes.

Some will be because of good, old-fashioned negligence, while others will be complete accidents. But either way they must be acknowledged.

Yes, it’s embarrassing to be called out on a mistake. But what’s worse is to act as if nothing happened. This doesn’t mean you can’t move on, of course you have to move on. It’s a simple, three step process and something we all need to get better at, if we want to build our brands and businesses in a highly-respected manner:

  • Acknowledge the mistake.
  • Apologize for making it.
  • Amend it and move on.

#5 – Professional Entrepreneurs Value Their Reputation

This is the big one. The one that’ll separate the ‘men from the boys’ so to speak (and the ladies from the girls, obviously!).

Nathaniel Hawthorne said, “The way to BE nothing, is to DO nothing!”

I love that quote. It reminds me that what you DO matters. It matters the moment I do it, immediately after, and months (if not years!) later.

Yes, you can have big goals and a winner’s mindset, but unless that translates into action – it’s worthless.

A true professional understands that their reputation is far more important than their monthly profit and loss statement. Yes, we all want to grow a grow a profitable business, but not on the back of ‘dodgy’ actions.

Instead, do it right, and for the right reasons:

  • Stand by your refund process (even if a request comes in on day 29 of the 30 day period).
  • Put a premium on the importance of over-delivering on customer service.
  • Refunding overpayments – this is a major trust builder.
  • Conduct yourself appropriately at networking happy hours (many reputations have been lost because of alcohol!).
  • Represent your experience (or lack of experience) correctly.
  • Keep your word – no matter how small the promise.

Final Thoughts on Professionalism in Entrepreneurship

Remember what I always say…

Your personal brand is what people say about you when you’re not around. When you’re not at that coffee meetup, or that big conference, or on that mastermind call… how do you want your prospects, peers, friends, team members and customers to talk about you?

That’s your brand!

All of this comes back to embracing a professional mindset. It’s not that hard to simply ‘do things better’. With a little planning, execution and genuine passion to get it done the right way, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a more professional entrepreneur – and the benefits WILL come your way.

10 Lessons Learned Writing My First Business Book [Infographic]

When I became an entrepreneur way back in 2004, the idea of writing my first business book to help budding entrepreneurs was always a huge, but distant goal that loomed in the back of my head whenever I sat down to plan out my long-term targets at the end of each year.

When I started blogging and podcasting in 2010 it became something that I thought more about, as my ‘work’ grew in popularity, and I came into contact with more like-minded entrepreneurs. Little did I know it was going to be the catalyst for my author dream to become a reality.

By the end of 2012 I received my first publishing offer!

I ended up not going with that initial offer, but it did make me re-think my goal of writing my first business book a little more seriously. Was I finally ready to put in the work and make it happen? Not too long after getting that first offer, I was introduced to a literary agent, and got straight to work on our first proposal. After sending the proposal to 16 publishing houses, I received four more offers – a buy-in rate of 25%… not bad for a first time author!

The rest, as they say, is history… We recently celebrated the second anniversary of Virtual Freedom, and I wanted to share some of the lessons I learned during my journey to getting published to anyone out there who might be planning on writing their own book in the future.

CHRIS-INFOGRAPHIC 6-5 (1) copy-page-001

In addition to this infographic, and staying on the same subject, you might want to listen to this episode of YoupreneurFM, where I delve into writing a book is one of the easiest and fastest ways to build a profitable online brand.

To take things to the next level, I strongly suggest that you also check out this episode of the podcast, too. This was a real goodie, where I’m joined with my good friend and New York Times bestselling author, Jay Baer to talk about how we can market our book all the way to the bestseller lists and beyond. It’s gold. Trust me.

One thing is for sure… writing a book aint easy! And it’s aint for everyone! But, if you’re focused on getting your word out into the world, it’s still, in my opinion, the best way to do just that and there are so many benefits to writing my first business book that I haven’t even touched on here – perhaps I’ll cover that on another infographic in the future!

6 Ways to Profit From Your Personal Brand (Part 2 of 2)

In part one of this video series, we discussed the importance of branding and how it isn’t exclusively for large companies and big name brands anymore. As modern audiences become more tech-savvy, they look for connections with real people, which is why personal branding has become such a huge factor for entrepreneurs and small business owners.

We also went over a few different ways that you can profit from your personal brand online, ranging from coaching and creating different kinds of digital products to holding live events (whether they are small masterminds, or actual conferences) – these events can be a complete game-changer when it comes to sealing what your personal brand is all about.

Today we dive into more ‘intermediate’ levels of monetising your brand as we talk about the finer details of affiliate marketing, what many consider to be the ‘holy grail’ of online business profiting and how it can take your tribe up to the next level.

That wraps up this two part series – I hope these six monetization methods have given you an idea on how you can monetize your own personal brand. Just remember that whichever strategy you decide to develop, it’s all about making sure that you create quality solutions that your audience needs!

To recap the six ways to profit from your personal brand, here they are:

  • Offer coaching and consulting
  • Creating digital downloadable products
  • Affiliate marketing and promoting other peoples products
  • Launching software products and services
  • Offer a membership community experience
  • Planning and holding live events

There are LOTS of ways to building a business around your personal brand… LOTS! It’s all we talk about inside the Youpreneur Community!

6 Ways to Profit From Your Personal Brand (Part 1 of 2)

profit-personal-brand

Branding is a term that’s been used in marketing meetings for years, as companies planned and strategized over demographics in corporate boardrooms. However in today’s world, it’s becoming more evident that it isn’t just companies and organizations that should develop their brands.

Personal branding has become a key aspect for entrepreneurs, as modern audiences have grown to want to do business with people instead of businesses. Developing your personal brand, is the easiest way to set yourself apart from everyone else in your niche.

Monetising your personal brand is where you take it to the next level. However, first you’ve got to learn exactly HOW you can profit from your personal brand. Couple that together with a ‘primary profit mentality’ – which allows you to pay yourself first, you’ll be off to the races!

To help entrepreneurs think about profiting properly from their personal brands, I recently broadcasted a great session on Periscope where I broke down the different ways that you can make money online, based on an authentic personal brand – I captured the entire broadcast for the blog, and here’s the first part (part two is coming next week!).

There’s more to being successful business than beating your inbox and understanding what your customer wants (although those are important!). I hope this first video has helped give you an idea of how to make the most out of, and how to profit from your personal brand.

Think of it like your business ‘fingerprint’ – no two personal brands are exactly the same.

As I always say, you have to be seen to sell!

Now I’d love to hear from you! Have you started monetizing your brand or are you still deciding which route to start with? Let me know which way you believe will suit your brand best – send me a tweet. And, don’t forget to tune in again next Tuesday for the concluding part of this training.

Why You Need to Slow Down to Achieve More

slow-down-more

I’ve been thinking a lot about speed recently…

  • The speed at which I can read a book.
  • The speed at which I can hit my goals.
  • The speed at which I can sell out a new event.
  • The speed at which I can connect with my community every day – both inside our private membership and via social media.

Lots and lots of thinking, and all based around speed. Then it hit me… “Chris, this is all very well, but man… you’re going to get very tired, very quickly if you keep going at this pace!”. And I’m right.

I’ve burned out before (twice!), and it won’t happen again, I tell ya!

Why not slow down to achieve more?

Know When to Slow Things Down

Entrepreneurs can get caught up in a spiral of never-ending working, networking and promoting – which is why it’s important to know when to slow things down… to achieve more.

Slowing down helps you make sure that you don’t steamroll into projects, waste resources like time (our most valuable commodity) and money, and it can ensure that your entrepreneurial growth succeeds, above and beyond expectations.

Not only that, but when you slow down, you become more relaxed – we must switch off from time to time. Doing so is good of our health, our relationships, our business. Everything.

Rebooting, Regrouping, Refocusing

It’s this rebooting and regrouping that so many personal brand entrepreneurs need to start embracing… hell… we need to start falling in love with the darn concept!

Doing so will also help us focus on the bigger picture. The more important aspects of our brands and business. Things like our overall consistency in producing high quality content to help our audience, as well as the relationships that we have with our audience members… AKA. Our Community. AKA. Our Customers!

So, think about being more deliberate with your actions. With the projects you work on. With the time you spend doing what you do, and with whom you’re spending it with.

Thinking about what you can do, what changes you can make – to slow down to achieve more.

What do you think of this ‘slow down’ message I’m harking on about? Tweet me, and let me know!

3 Reasons to Start Using Snapchat to Grow Your Business

snap-to-grow-business

Update: As of January 2017 I have decided to move ‘snapping’ over to Instagram Stories. However, everything below is still relevant to IG Stories, so carry on reading / watching!

It took me a while to be convinced that Snapchat was going to be worthwhile for me to invest time into, from a business perspective.

Earlier in 2015 my good friend Lewis Howes was in town to speak at the conference which I host in the Philippines each year, Tropical Think Tank. One evening as we were sitting on the beach chatting away, he took out his phone and starting ‘snapchatting’. I’d heard of the app, but had no idea what it was really all about – he tried to convince me it was awesome and that I should get active on it. He didn’t do a very good job of it, as I dismissed it almost immediately.

Later in the year when I was in the UK keynoting an event with my favourite online video darling, Amy Schmittauer, she also started talking about it, and was openly ‘snapping’ in front of me the entire time we were hanging out. She also tried to show me how to use the app – again, I was confused as hell and dismissed it very quickly.

Then, just recently, as I sat at the table enjoying a post Christmas snack and drink with my 17-year old daughter, Chloe, she took out her phone and starting ‘snapchatting’. This is it, I thought, I’ve gotta get to grips with this bloody thing, and figure out why everyone is going so goo-goo of this app.

10-minutes later, I was hooked.

She was able to achieve what Lewis and Amy had failed at – show me exactly how easy it was to use the app (I had downloaded it before 4-times and given up each time, deleting it over and over) and how fast I could be consuming content from people that I cared about, and wanted to learn from.

I instantly followed Lewis and Amy. Then Gary Vaynerchuk. After I watched a few of his videos, I needed no more convincing.

I’ve been ‘snapping’ daily ever since.

To learn how to quickly and easily setup your own Snapchat account, check out this excellent tutorial by Kristi Hines on Social Media Examiner.

Behind the Scenes

As mentioned at the top of the post, I’ve decided that I’m going to use Instagram as my ‘behind the scenes’ platform. People often ask me what a regular day for me looks like, where I work, what I do, where I go, etc. So, that’s what you’re gonna be getting from me on IG.

Please download the app (available for both iOS and Andriod) and add me.

In the meantime, check out the quick video above (which I took from a much longer #DuckerScope broadcast) which gives you three very, very solid reasons as to why you should be using Snapchat to grow your business in 2016.

Analytics

How long we retain your data – If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data – If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data – Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
