A Smarter Way to Get Free, Personalized Business Advice

Free Personalized Business Advice

I’m going to go out a limb today, my friends. I’m going to assume that if you follow my blog, you’re interested in starting or scaling a business.

Now I KNOW that’s rather presumptuous of me, but let’s just go with it for one post, shall we? Let’s assume that you’re here because you’re either at the beginning or in the middle stages of your entrepreneurial journey, and you’ve heard somewhere that blogs are a great place to get advice about where to start and what to do next.

I might be biased, but of course I agree that blogs and online sources are great places to learn about building a business. And this right here happens to be an especially good one if you want to build a business around your personal brand!

There are so many things that entrepreneurs need to learn about before they can start or grow. And from the logistics of setting up a business to tax info and outsourcing, it’s no wonder that so many would-be business rockstars get stuck in the overwhelm and end up never getting started or never scaling up. Or… believing that they can’t get free personalized business advice.

That fact, I love being an entrepreneur. And I think you do, too. Or at least you WILL, once you truly, truly understand what I’m about to share with you.

The Problem With Advice From Blogs

Every day, thousands of entrepreneurs look to blogs for the answers they need about business. And the problem with that isn’t what you may think. After all, blogs are GREAT sources of information for everything entrepreneurial, including:

  • How to quit a day job
  • How to start a business or a brand
  • How to manage unpredictable changes and pivoting
  • When it’s time to scale
  • How to outsource core tasks

But there’s a very simple dilemma at the core of using blogs to get all your information:

Blogs give general advice.

Now, don’t get me wrong. All the above info is important when you want to start and scale your business. All of it provides valuable information that can help you get where you want to be as an entrepreneur. I have my own list of blogs that I turn to when I need motivation and inspiration, and you probably do, too.

But it would be a mistake to stop there. If you want to start or grow a business, you need more than blogs to get you there!

Over the years, I’ve learned that the entrepreneurs who actually end up taking action in their lives and businesses are doing something a bit different from everyone else. Okay, they’re actually doing a LOT of things differently, let’s be honest, but for our purposes today, here’s what’s interesting: the entrepreneurs who succeed don’t stop at blogs for their business advice.

They may start there, especially those with online businesses, and they certainly use blogs to supplement their knowledge… but, they also intentionally seek out PERSONALIZED business advice. They go to the blog owners directly. They reach out to the business owners and entrepreneurs who’ve been there, and they ask for specific advice.

And that makes all the difference.

Why Personalized Advice Makes All The Difference

If you really want to get serious about succeeding in business, you need more than a list of seven tips on a blog (mine or anyone else’s) to get you there. You need to get your specific questions answered by someone who’s a bit (or a lot) further along the business continuum than you are. You need an opportunity to describe your situation in your own words, and then have someone respond directly to you.

But how on Earth is a struggling entrepreneur supposed to get highly personalized advice that applies specifically to their reality, their concerns, their struggles and challenges? And how are they supposed to afford that?! (As if modern entrepreneurs didn’t have enough to worry about.)

Well, my friends, I’m so glad you asked. Because starting soon, I’m going to be calling on my 12-years as a serial entrepreneur and 25-years total in the sales and marketing world to do exactly that.

For you. For free.

Enter The #DuckerZone

As I mentioned briefly in my last post, The Ducker Zone is my new Q&A-style YouTube show. It’s definitely not my first rodeo in terms of being on video (I’ve got Periscope and webinars and countless other video training series to thank for that!), but it IS exactly what you’ve all been asking me to do for years: create a library of evergreen, actionable, searchable, and well-produced content that gets you the answers you need for your own business. Not anyone else’s—yours. It’s the first time I’ve ever offered this type of free personalized business advice, giving you direct weekly access to me and everything I know, channeled specifically into answers for your most burning questions.

DUCKERZONE IMAGE

I’m working tirelessly behind the scenes right now to get it all ready for your eyes and ears, but here’s what you need to know right now about one of the biggest ventures I’ve ever taken on:

  • You’ll get a new episode every week. I get so many questions about entrepreneurship and business, and I can’t WAIT to start tackling them in this new, regular format. Every week, there will be a new episode with advice that directly answers one entrepreneur’s biggest question. That entrepreneur gets free, actionable advice from someone who’s been there and done that over the last 12 years, and everyone else gets the benefit of learning right along with them.
  • It’ll be real, uncensored, and straight from the heart. Everyone in my Youpreneur community knows this already, but I can be pretty direct at times. To me, it’s a waste of time to dance around the real issues and realities of entrepreneurship, so you can expect that The Ducker Zone will be an opportunity to get the benefit of that in a whole new way. To me, the show is the natural next step in the evolution of my personal brand, which is all about helping you succeed doing the thing you love for the people you want to serve.
  • It’ll be unlike anything out there right now. There are many YouTube shows that’ll answer viewer questions across a number of industries and niches. However, I want to go one step further. I’ll be giving shout-outs, using screenshots to showcase the businesses of those who submit questions, and giving viewers a genuine way to reach out to you after the show—should they wish to do so. Plus, we’ll have funky intro music—so, it’ll be a ‘winner’ all round!
  • I need you to make this a success! Everything I do on this blog, on social media, and in my mastermind community is focused on you. Until recently, that “you” has been more general in nature, but as I get more specific with who I want to serve and how I can help, I realize that the “you” is getting more specific than ever. If you’re reading this, YOU ARE THE “YOU”! I want to help you make 2017 the best year ever for your business, and I’m sitting on the line right now waiting for your questions. Seriously. I’m not doing this show for my own benefit. Submit your questions on social media using #DuckerZone—I’ll have nothing to talk about if you don’t! 🙂

The best part about getting personalized advice is this: when we hear specific solutions delivered to our fellow entrepreneurs, our powers of critical thinking come into play, and we can always find nuggets of wisdom that work for our situations, too. That’s why my One-Day Business Breakthrough workshops with Pat Flynn were such a success, and that’s my plan and my commitment for The Ducker Zone—to answer specific questions that will help ONE entrepreneur to supercharge their business, and in the process to inspire and motivate others to think about things in a new way. This new show will empower you to make things happen, succeed as never before, and, of course, ask your own questions for a future episode!

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask

Why don’t more entrepreneurs seek out personalized advice?

I think it’s because they’re afraid.

They’re scared to put themselves out there with their idea and questions. Because that makes it REAL, doesn’t it? Once you share your business idea or struggles with someone—especially another entrepreneur—you’re accountable to that person. That person will know your idea or problem exists, will have offered specific advice, and will be expecting you to act on it.

But I know this community better than that. I know you’re ready to take your business to the next level (or even the first level). And now you know exactly what you need to do to get the personalized business advice you need, for free.

You’re welcome.

Starting NOW, submit your questions on social media using #DuckerZone.

And then tune in when we launch on YouTube soon. I can’t wait!

Lastly… anyone have any personal advice for me about what colour shirt I should wear for the first episode? 😉

Why Doesn’t Anyone Ever Ask Me This Question?

ask-me-this-question

IMPORTANT NOTE: I will soon be launching my brand new weekly YouTube show, #DuckerZone. If you’d like to pick my brains on anything, this is going to become the number one way of doing so – plus, you’ll get a mention on the show, too! Just ask your question on social media using the hashtag #DuckerZone to have it considered for inclusion. Thanks!

Anyone who’s been around here for awhile knows one thing about me: I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve started five businesses in 12-years (two have been complete flops!), my companies do business with partners in 12 countries on 4 continents, and I’ve been to 12 cities this year alone for various engagements and events.

Some would say I like to move around a bit.

When I share numbers like that, it’s not to impress you, believe me. It took me a long time to learn what works and what doesn’t in my business, and I’m still learning! So any context at the outset here is just that: context. And numbers like that often lead to a lot of questions. People want to know the details. What marketing works best for me? Why did I decide to build a personal brand? How do I structure my work day? What do I do to stay so productive?

I enjoy answering these kinds of questions at conferences, networking events, and online from the members of my Youpreneur community. I LOVE sharing what I know so that we can all learn from each other and build businesses that we’re proud of.

But let’s pretend we’re meeting for the first time. If you really want to make me think, and if you really want some insight that is going to be immediately applicable to YOUR business, you’re not going to ask me any of the above questions. Those “juicy” details might be hard to resist, I know, but let’s get real here. You have a business to run.

You need value bombs!

So, instead, you’re going to ask just one obscure question the first time you meet me (or any serial entrepreneur).

I want you to ask me this question:

How Do You Keep the Momentum Going?

And here’s my answer: Middle school science class.

What, not helpful?! Fine. I knew you were going to make me think. Let’s dive a bit deeper.

Seventh-grade science class (also known as kindergarten these days) taught us all Newton’s law of inertia: an object in motion tends to stay in motion.

This law applies to science experiments in the lab, to giant boulders rolling toward Indiana Jones (that whip action, tho!), and to all serial entrepreneurs in the real world. I’m an entrepreneur because I woke up one morning and decided I didn’t want to answer to a boss anymore. But I’m a serial entrepreneur because once I took the first terrifying step, it just made sense (financially and otherwise) to keep going.

If we follow Newton’s law to its logical conclusion, I’m probably going to keep moving on this entrepreneurial path now. Who knows where it will lead, but it would take what Newton called “an unbalanced force” to change my course now.

And the same is true for you.

Once you get started, physics is on your side to keep you moving!

I don’t know what the first step will be for you. Honestly, it doesn’t really matter what it is, as long as it’s something.

Maybe it’s submitting your resignation. Maybe it’s launching your first course. Maybe it’s hiring your first virtual assistant so you can reclaim some valuable hours in the day. (Who says you can’t buy time?!) Seriously, the actual step itself doesn’t matter. What matters is that you take it.

But how?

The Flip Side of Momentum

Back to Newton for just a sec. His rule of inertia has a dark side, too: an object (or entrepreneur) at rest tends to stay at rest. I learned this one the hard way back in 2012 when, after almost 7 years of sitting still at a desk for 16 hours straight every day on average, I woke up one morning and literally could not get out of bed. I’d been so “at rest” for so long that I needed hugely invasive medical intervention to get back in motion.

Back surgery was my only option—it was the “unbalanced force” that finally kicked me out of my office chair, into a stand-up desk arrangement, and finally, happily, into a healthier work-life balance.

I do not recommend that particular path, kids.

Whether you’re sitting too long, working too many hours, or not working at all, Newton sees no difference: you’re an object at rest. And unless an unbalanced force shows up to shake things up a bit, chances are damn good that nothing is going to change.

What will that unbalanced force look like for you? Again, I don’t know. You probably don’t, either. Money problems, family problems, health problems? I sure hope it doesn’t look like a blown L5-S1 disc in your lower back.

Today, if there are no boulders on your immediate horizon, you might think you’re doing okay. You’re content. Doing “well enough.” You’re keeping calm and carrying on. Things could be better, but you’re not sure how.

From that perspective, there are two ways of looking at the future: you could wait here, “at rest,” until a boulder shows up … or you could do a little shapeshifting exercise.

Avert your Isaac, Newton! If anyone can bend the laws of physics, it’s an entrepreneur.

Become Your Own Unbalanced Force

If you’d rather not sit around waiting for an unbalanced force to act upon you, I have good news for you: you don’t have to! You can be the boulder that rolls over your own limitations and chooses a new path for yourself.

You can decide today—right now, even!—that you’ve had enough of…

  • Inaction
  • Fear
  • Overworking
  • The rat race
  • Poor health
  • Entrepreneurial burnout

You can decide that instead of being the object that is acted upon, you’re the object doing the acting. You’re the one in control of where you end up in life and business.

YOU get to decide.

Be Bold. Be Bolder. Be a Boulder.

Newton’s law tells you everything you need to know about why you’re stalled and what you need to do to get moving again. We’ve bent the rules a bit to let you be both object and unbalanced force at different times, but again, breaking a few rules is what makes you an entrepreneur in the first place.

Now, the big question to ask yourself is…how am I going to keep the momentum going?

5 New Words for Entrepreneurial Fear

entrepreneurial-fear

Following my annual community survey last month, I noticed a trend.

Over and over again, the 1,300+ of you who took time out of your day to tell me about yourselves and your businesses (thank you!) used a single word to describe what it’s like to be an entrepreneur. The theme was so pervasive, in fact, that I started to wonder if you’d all gone in with each other behind my back just to make sure I was paying attention.

And I am!

The word didn’t surprise me, and it won’t surprise you, either. I experience it regularly myself, and I’ve come to see it as a blessing and a curse in everything I want to accomplish.

What is it? Fear. Entrepreneurial fear, to be precise. Every entrepreneur is afraid, and given the opportunity, every entrepreneur wants to talk about it.

So let’s talk about it.

How We Talk About Fear

At least in this community of personal brand-building entrepreneurs, fear sounds like a lot of different things. From the survey, I noticed people using phrases like these to describe their hesitations:

  • I don’t know what makes my personal brand unique
  • What if people don’t want the ‘thing’ I’m really good at?
  • I’m still trying to figure out who I want to serve
  • Is it too late for me to start building an online business?
  • I think the market is too crowded for me
  • I’m not original enough

Sound familiar? I think everyone wonders at times if the next step is the right one, and we can work ourselves into all kinds of anxiety trying to figure out how to do it all perfectly. There was a point in my own business where I was so skeptical of live streaming. After all, it’s very LIVE, isn’t it? However, once I got myself into a rhythm with Periscope, I was a total believer.

But that’s exactly the point. The fears you share with me, and the ones I share with you, aren’t really about the details. The specifics don’t matter as much as we think they do. I may have been wary of live video streaming, and you may be nervous about webinar platforms, but in the end, what matters isn’t the things we’re afraid of. What matters is the mindset behind them, and the very real risk of trying to succeed from a place of fear.

If I may be so bold, I don’t care what you’re afraid of. I care that you’re always afraid.

New Words for Entrepreneurial Fear

Words have power, my friends. You already know this because you used such an important one over and over again in the survey. And just like you all got my attention with the fear theme, I now want to get your attention with some alternatives. Next time you’re tempted to say “I’m afraid” of something, try out these five phrases instead. And I promise, if you put the same energy behind them that you put into feeling fearful, you’ll see business success you never could’ve dreamed of.

Instead of “I’m scared,” say…

I’m inspired – See something new in the online space? See someone trying out a new platform, technique, or project that would be perfect for your business? You’re not afraid to give it a go—you’re inspired to put your own spin on it and try it yourself. In fact, you’re so inspired that you might just reach out to the person already doing it and tell them directly that they’ve convinced you it’s worth doing.

I’m in demand – See an opportunity to grow your audience, reach more clients, serve more people? Of course you do. Entrepreneurs see possibility everywhere, and guess what? You’re not afraid to pursue those opportunities—you’re seeing exactly where your expertise is needed in your community. That group of people is waiting for you to show up and help them, and ultimately, that’s what entrepreneurs do, day after day. You show up. You serve. You make it about them—and about HOW you can serve them with the solutions you create to solve the problems they’re experiencing.

I’m summoned – Oh, there’s a new social media platform that every other business owner is yapping about? There’s a new launch funnel that’s converting like mad? You’re not afraid that technology is moving too fast for your online business to keep up—you’re called to become a better entrepreneur today than you were yesterday.

Yes, the world of online business changes rapidly. The game itself changes faster than any of us can stay on top of, but that’s no excuse to sit out the whole round. If you ask me, that’s the fuel to rise to the occasion. You’ll need it on a regular basis to take your business to the next level. Over and over again.

I’m capable – Your launch failed, you lost money on an investment, you made a mistake that cost you big? You’re not afraid to try again—you’re newly capable of avoiding those missteps next time around. Trust me, I have failed far more times than I’ve succeeded in life, and if I’d been too afraid to try again after any of those failures, I never would’ve made my first three figures, let alone my first seven!!!

Capability is not a measure of how many times you’ve succeeded. It’s a measure of how often you’ve failed and kept going.

I’m ready – There’s a reason you’re afraid to be an entrepreneur, and it’s not because you’re not ready. It’s because you are. It’s because your idea matters to you (as it should!). It’s because you know you’re the right person, with the right idea, at the right time.

The world needs what you have to offer, and because my online community  is all about building a business around your personal brand, I can’t say it enough: no one else can do the thing you want to do. If you don’t do it, it simply won’t get done. Ever. The potentially limitless audience that needs you will never get the solutions, the service, and the inspiration that they’re waiting for. You owe it to them to deliver.

You’re not afraid. You’re ready. There is no more entrepreneurial fear inside of you.

The Final Word on ‘Fear’

You may not ever completely banish fear from business. It’s the four-letter F-word that kept us alive in caveman times, so it’s instinctual, but now, more often than necessary, it just “protects” us from our own potential. We mistake every little fear as life-threatening. We give fear more power than it deserves by telling ourselves over and over that we’re afraid.

This week, I challenge you to change the tape that plays on loop in that brilliant entrepreneurial mind of yours.

Stop saying you’re afraid.

Start saying you’re inspired, in demand, summoned, capable, and ready.

And then, get out of your own way already! You’ve got places to be.

Starting a Podcast: 10 Reasons Why Your Business Needs a Voice!

starting-a-podcast-10-reasons

Special Note: If after reading this post you decide to start podcasting, I’d strongly suggest you check out my friends at Podcast Websites. They’re the ONLY folks I recommend when it comes to everything you need to create, grow and monetize your podcast – including the actual hosting of your podcast, too… their 24-hour customer service is exceptional, too.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I stand before you today with one goal in mind…

I will demonstrate beyond a shadow of a doubt, why your audience not only WANTS, but NEEDS you to consider starting a podcast.

But before we address the reasons why your business needs a voice, let’s begin by confronting the three reasons why people typically avoid it and why, if you’ve been doing likewise, they should no longer stand in your way.

AVOIDANCE REASON #1:  I Don’t Have an Audience

I totally get it.  Why start a podcast, if there’s no audience to create it for, right?

This is one of the most common objections for starting a podcast, but the irony is that a podcast is a great way to begin BUILDING an audience.

The rising popularity of podcasts combined with the fact that they’re easily consumed (unlike reading a long article, or ebook) means you’ll have a far greater chance of building a loyal audience that likes, trusts and feels like they know you.

AVOIDANCE REASON #2:  I Don’t Have Room in My House / Business for a Studio

If you have a desk – you have all the room you need for a podcast.

This is where I podcast:

starting-a-podcast

Since podcasting is still relatively new, our mind tends to link the concept of podcasting – to radio broadcasting. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Some of today’s most popular podcasts are being created in a small corner of a room.

And you don’t need that fancy microphone to get started, either. Believe me. I just used my Apple headphones when I started in 2010.

Speaking of equipment…

AVOIDANCE REASON #3:  I Can’t Afford the Equipment

You’ll be surprised with how little you need to begin.

All you need is…

  • Computer.
  • Microphone.
  • Podcasting Software (Mac comes with Garageband already built into its applications).
  • A good topic to discuss.

Ok, let’s get to the good stuff.

10 Reasons Why Your Business Needs a Voice!

#1 People really, really like podcasts nowadays

According to recent study conducted by Edison Research podcasting continues to show strong growth over the past 7 years. In fact, many believe that 2017 will be the break-out year for business podcasting, particularly.

#2 Not everyone has time to read 4550 words

The average blog posts is approximately 700-words, which can can be read in about 5-minutes. However, the average podcast is 35-minutes which translates into 4,550 words, the equivalent of 6.5 blog posts.

Not only does this allow you to deliver more content to your audience, but it’s also delivered in a way that’s easy to consume.

And as a side note, if you’re not taking advantage of listening to podcasts during your drive to and from your place of work, or while taking a walk, or on a plane journey, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity to leverage your time.

#3 It’s easier to produce a consistent podcast, than blog posts

“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot. There’s no way around these two things that I’m aware of, no shortcut.” ― Stephen King

Whoa! If the great Stephen King is saying there’s no shortcut to writing, then what does that mean for the rest of us?

The good news however is that podcasting allows you to create an amazing piece of content without having to go through countless revisions of your work. In fact, the more conversational and casual it is, the better it will connect with your audience.

That’s one of the biggest compliments I get about my podcast, Youpreneur FM – that it’s like a couple of friends talking in a pub, or over dinner.

But if you’d still like to clean up your audio after recording you can easily find an inexpensive editor on Upwork and have them take out any pauses or “ums” and “ers”.

#4 Podcasts are sticky

When someone decides to listen to a podcast they’ll usually listen to the entire show, and if they like it, there’s a good chance they may listen to another.

That’s a LOT of content!

What’s great about this is that they’ll either feel closer and resonate with your message, or they’ll decide this isn’t the right place for them, and that’s a good thing. The whole point of getting your voice out there is to attract and build the right audience for YOU and your business.

#5 Your personal brand will benefit

I’m a huge believer in building a personal brand, but having an impressive logo and catchy slogan will only qualify you as being average in today’s digital marketplace. What’s most important is that your business has a personality. And I can think of no better way to give your business a personality than by giving it your VOICE!

#6 Become an instant, welcomed guest

When someone listens to your podcast you’ve suddenly become the “invited guest” within their home or office. No different than sitting across from this listener and having a face to face meeting with their undivided attention. Yeah! That’s pretty powerful stuff.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge fan of email marketing, video marketing, and consistent content marketing (such as blog posts and infographics), but there’s nothing like the level of intimacy podcasting creates.

youpreneur fm

#7 Align yourself with successful people

If you choose to launch and grow a interview format podcast, all those guests you’ll be chasing down to have come on your show will make a difference to your overall brand, too.

The more successful people you have on your show from your industry, or niche, the closer aligned you’ll be seen to them and their success. Perception is key and is often very, very contagious.

#8 The on-going servicing of your existing audience

No matter how big or small your current audience I can guarantee they’re listening to podcasts.

So if they’re going out of they way to open your emails, read your blog posts and register for your webinars – why not service them with a podcast!

Not only will your podcast help form a deeper relationship, but it can also serve as a platform to spotlight members of your audience who are putting your teaching into practice. Some the best content you can create are case studies, which demonstrate that what you teach actually works. My buddy Pat Flynn does this better than almost everyone else I know.

#9 Develop your speaking skills

I absolutely love speaking, but like anything else, speaking is a skill that needs to be developed.

What’s great about podcasting is that it will allows you to continually work on your craft. It also helps you to build confidence in your speaking ability without needing the approving laughter, or applause from a live audience.

It can be a bit strange speaking to an invisible audience, but that same skill will help you deliver engaging and entertaining webinars, which is a skill every digital entrepreneur should be improving.

#10 Opportunity to repurpose content

Each of your podcast episodes can be repurposed into additional pieces of content.

Here’s a few ideas:

  • Have your podcast transcribed and distilled into a single blog post with a call to action of listening to the entire show.
  • Have the best points of your podcast turned into a 7-point, or 10-point infographic.
  • Breakup a single podcast recording into 2 or 3 episodes. I highly recommend this if you have the opportunity to attract a popular guest on your show. Just make sure to communicate in advance to them that you plan on breaking it up into 2 or 3 shows that way the two of you can properly plan what to cover and where to break things up.
  • Turn some of your most downloaded podcast episodes into Slide decks to share via social, or even into live presentations.
  • The opportunities for repurposing are literally endless!

A Closing Word on Starting a Podcast

Creating something of value takes practice and patience. Remember that when you’re planning on starting a podcast.

Don’t make the mistake of expecting your first few episodes to be perfect, or to attract a lot of downloads.

The goal of your first few episodes should simply be to complete them (aka “ship your product”) and learn as much as you can from the process. With that mindset and approach, your following episodes will continue to improve in both delivery and content.

Trust me. Your audience will thank you for it. Mine does… every week.

And with that, ladies and gentlemen, I rest my case!

5 Daily Habits to Grow Your Business – FREAKISHLY Fast!

FREAKISHLY-FAST

“Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world!”

Those are the words of Archimedes, a famous Greek mathematician and inventor with an infamous obsession for innovation. And while his words may seem anecdotal, or appear to be written for inspirational intent, Archimedes was referring to a real principle; a principle which has the power to not only move the world, but can also empower a single entrepreneur with the ability to accomplish more than would seem humanly possible.

What Archimedes was referring to is the principle of leverage.

The Most Powerful Human Leveraging Tool

I believe habits are one of the most powerful (and free) tools an entrepreneur can enlist in while building a business, and as you may have already witnessed among friends, family and acquaintances, habits contain the seeds of both success and destruction.

This means…

  • Enlist the wrong habits and your business will fail.
  • Enlist the right habits, and your business will grow. Freakishly fast.

What I’d like to present you with today are five daily habits to grow your business that can give you enormous leverage within your entrepreneurial journey.

But before we dive in, allow me to give you a word of warning. The power of any habit is the consistency at which it is performed.  It’s not a one time thing, or a flurry of action. They are seemingly subtle actions which begin to build momentum and power over time. And faster than you think.

Here are five habits I suggest implementing – I doubt you’ll be upset at me for suggesting them to you!

Habit #1 – Create a Morning Routine

Benjamin Franklin said “Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”

But just getting up at the crack of dawn in and of itself will not make you rich or lower your blood pressure. It’s what you DO with those mornings that count.

During an interview on Youpreneur FM with Hal Elrod, author of the best-selling book The Miracle Morning: The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life (Before 8AM), Hal detailed his personal transformation that took place while studying and implementing morning rituals.

In case you haven’t read the book, or don’t know about Hal, his personal story takes you on a journey of both tragedy and triumph as he overcame personal death (he literally died for 6 minutes after being struck by a drunk driver) and then business setbacks, resulting in the loss of his home.

So what turned things around for Hal?

Things drastically changed the moment he decided to implement the habit he and countless others now refer to as The Miracle Morning. A set of six practices that sets up your day for success by taking control of the first hour of your morning.

Hal breaks down these miracle morning practices into the acronym Life S.A.V.E.R.S.

  • Silence
  • Affirmations
  • Visualizations
  • Excercise
  • Reading
  • Scribing (Writing)

But despite being very easy to begin implementing this list, what’s even more alluring is how FAST miracle morning practitioners are seeing results. Not only is the miracle morning helping entrepreneurs grow their business, but many people are also reporting that it’s completely changing their lives.

As Hal reminds us, a great life is built with great days, and great days begin by taking control of your mornings.

Be sure to listen to that episode with Hal on the podcast, and if you’re a Youpreneur Community member, you can check out his chit-chat on building a business around your book, which is excellent.

Habit #2 – Schedule What Matters Most

If it doesn’t get scheduled, it doesn’t get done.  That’s an original “Ducker-ism”, which has been a personal secret to moving my business forward over the 10+ years that I’ve been an entrepreneur.

What works for me is using 30-minute chunks of time (sometimes longer), during which I schedule everything that will move my business forward – daily.

But before I give you my short list of items, I’d like to highlight the fact that it’s critical to schedule what matters most FIRST. Your time is extremely valuable and you’ve only got so much to work with each day so make sure it’s being invested in projects and opportunities that will make the biggest impact.

Here are a few of the tasks I schedule (along with tips for maximizing that time) on a regular basis:

  • Clear and Concise Delegation: Having a team is one of the best ways to leverage your time. But if you’re unclear with the project and its objectives you’ll end up frustrating your team and dragging it out longer than it should be. Your team cannot read your mind. Put the time in to deliver a clear task with measurable ways for your team to know they’ve accomplished your objective.
  • Responding to emails: One of the best tips I can give is to be selective about which emails you respond to. Not all e-mails should require a reply. Pay attention to the type of emails you’re consistently getting. It may be a sign there’s a process missing in your business.
  • Reaching out to people I’ve just met at conferences: I’m a huge believer in networking. But handshakes and business cards are only the first step. It’s what you do with those introductions that matter. Why not make it a goal to reach out and see what value you can offer to your newly acquired contact. This also means you must be selective about who you reach out to – since you’re planning to make a time investment.
  • Brainstorming Ideas for podcasts: Creating a podcast and securing great guests doesn’t happen by accident. In fact, the easiest part of podcasting is recording the the thing! If this is a medium you plan on leveraging you’ll need to be deliberate about planning your show, booking your guests and doing your research before pressing record.
  • Building Processes: Time spent on process building is one of the best uses of your time when building a business. But it’s not easy. There will always be something else nagging at your conscious that needs to be be done right-now! Just remember that the only way to create control – is to stay in control of your time. So set aside time for process building, it’s really the best way to deal with tomorrow’s emergencies.

Your list will be different depending on the type of business you’re in and the maturity of your business. The most important take away is that you identify the important moving parts and schedule them.

That’s the key to developing your own daily habits to grow your business.

Habit #3 – Focus on What You Can Control

The craziest things will happen while building a business, and since luck is a coin with two sides you’ll discover that both good and bad situations will come knocking. The most important thing, however is to remember that your job is to only focus on what you can control.

This means…

  • Identify the tangible steps you can take each day towards achieving your business goals. It’s not enough just to list them.
  • Don’t lose sleep over losing a large client. Instead, focus on ways you can consistently cultivate new opportunities.
  • Meet setbacks with a “what do we need to do right now” mentality instead of complaining about what happened.
  • Make it a habit of over-delivering for your clients. The day may come when a mistake is made and it will be helpful to have a reputation of over-delivery which helps ease any frustration and will cause your clients to give you the benefit of the doubt.

Now, does this mean you’ll be able to prevent anything bad from happening in the future?  No, unfortunately not.  The purpose of this habit is to give you mental relief when the storms of business do strike, and strike they will.  But that’s ok, you’ll soon discover that your biggest breakthroughs and innovations will come as a result of these unforeseen setbacks.  So stay focused on what you can control.

Habit #4 – Learn to Say ‘No’. Often!

This is tough one. As entrepreneurs our minds are built to find ways around obstacles, and to inspire people that anything’s possible. But in order to build a business you must be focused on the actions that will move your business forward.

This is why learning to say no is important.  Steve Jobs put it this way, “People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I’m actually as proud of the things we haven’t done as the things I have done. Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.”

So remember, when you say YES to something – you’re also saying NO to something else – and vice versa. Make sure you’re always saying YES to the right thing.

Habit #5 – End Each Day with ‘Tomorrow’ on Paper

Along with creating a set of morning rituals (as outlined in Habit #1) I recommend ending each day with a brief planning session of what tomorrow will look like.

This planning session should take no more than 10-minutes and should include the following items:

Morning ritual time: Even if you’ve learned how to get yourself up on auto-pilot I still recommend writing down your protected morning time. This habit will reinforce the importance of this time, while also increasing the likelihood of you sticking to it.

Calendar: Are there any upcoming meetings for which you should start preparing for?

Your #1 priority item: If nothing else get’s done tomorrow except for one thing. What should it be? Once again, this doesn’t mean you should only do one thing tomorrow, but this is the one thing that must get done at all costs. And with that said, why not make that the first thing you work on.

Fires: What “fires” (aka. emergencies) need to be put out? Every business will have its fair share of setbacks to deal with, but if you can use them as an opportunity to improve your procedures & systems they can actually become a blessing. But that only happens if you take the time to identify your “fires,” source how they happened, and then see what could be put in place to prevent them from happening in the future.

Today’s Highlights: Every day should end with gratitude. Even if your entire day felt like a mess there’s always something you can find.  This practice will give you positive closure each day, which then sets up your next day for success. What you may also find is that you’ll start finding your days filled with more things to be thankful for. Coincidence? I think not.

Learn to Love the Journey, My Friends!

Building a successful business is a journey. The business you have today may end up looking a lot different than what you had envisioned, and that’s okay. It’s fine. This is why it’s important to truly fall in love with the process of putting together you’re own personal daily habits to grow your business.

Be excited about what the future holds, but make sure to love the place you’re at today. Pivots will come and go – get used to ’em!

10 Reasons Why Every Entrepreneur Should Attend Tropical Think Tank 2017

The online business landscape changes at a blistering pace and it is up to entrepreneurs to stay up-to-date with the latest tips, tactics and techniques if they want to stay ahead of the game! Events and conferences are the perfect way to blend work and meeting new people, but sometimes it can even be more than just that – sometimes it’s life-changing.

It’s this term, life-changing, that we hear from Tropical Think Tank attendees more than anything else, when we ask them to sum up their experience at the event.

Myself and my team have now held the event three years in a row, and we’ll be doing it again in March 2017, for a fourth time.

As well as just being life-changing, here are a few more reasons on how Tropical Think Tank can be a cornerstone in your entrepreneurial journey and the catalyst to take everything to the next level.

To get a feel of just how much of a ‘different’ event Tropical Think Tank is, check out this quick video, showing behind the scenes and more from the 2016 event:

1. Upgrade You & Your Business!

Being an entrepreneur means that you have to constantly keep your ear to the ground and update yourself on what is happening.  Attending events like TTT gives you the chance to see what new business ideas and strategies are out there and how you can apply them to your own business.

2. Get Up Close & Personal with Industry Influencers

One of the best perks of getting to attend events and conferences is the chance to meet industry influencers. Listening to podcasts and reading blogs are always helpful, but nothing really beats the real thing when (if you are lucky!) you get to sit and chat at length with a leader or an influencer in your industry. Tropical Think Tank offers an intimate beach setting where you get to spend a week meeting with these leaders, along with the chance to actually build real relationships with them.

3. Meeting Your Peers In Person

Entrepreneurs are definitely a different breed and it is always refreshing to meet someone as passionate and as driven as you are about business. These connections can help you with accountability, guidance or even as a sounding board for new ideas. The power of being around like-minded entrepreneurs can be a driving force behind helping you come up with a new process, or even product or service to launch to your community.

4. Promote and Sell Yourself

Now that you are with the right people, it’s time to share or promote what you and your business can offer. Get those business cards out and start networking. Meeting people in person and explaining what you are all about creates a more memorable impression for future possible collaborations – and we’ve seen a TON of them at TTT!

5. Get Feedback – Instantly!

Another benefit of attending live events is that it allows you to share what you are working on with other people. Entrepreneurs who work at home can use the chance to talk to other people, to help give them perspective. By bouncing ideas off of people who know the ins and outs of the industry, you can refine your idea based on their recommendations or experience, before that ever crucial launch and make the best possible first impression.

Next years line-up of expert speakers is just as powerful as our past events!

6. Refreshing Connections & Creating More

The ability to develop great connections online has gotten stronger lately, especially through social media and while staying in contact through Facebook or Twitter is convenient, there really is nothing like meeting your contacts face-to-face that can help cement those relationships. That’s what Tropical Think Tank is all about… add a tropical beach setting and an action-packed week with highly passionate entrepreneurs, and you should be all set to create new and awesome memories.

MASTERMIND-TTT16

7. Renew Focus, Energy and Passion

It can be easy to get stuck in the same routine day-in and day-out, which is why attending conferences like TTT can help bring back enthusiasm and focus on what is important in your business. Using the information and ideas you glean during the sessions, the connections you have established along the way, not to mention the inspiration from both peers and leaders alike, can help empower your business.

8. Taking Action is What It’s ALL About!

Sessions at conferences are always full of strong and valuable content that you can use in your businesses though sometimes we get stuck in the planning stage and never manage to put everything into motion. Tropical Think Tank encourages taking action – through its 30 Day Action exercise, its own private FB group where you can report for accountability and the TTT Alumni Program where previous attendees show what can be achieved in just 12 months time.

9. Have Fun, Fun, Fun!

After all the travel and exchanging of ideas during the keynote sessions, everyone deserves to unwind and have fun. The TTT 2016 week has fun activities planned from hanging by the beach with cool cocktails and heading out to sea on our special chill-out boats, right down to our now famous White Party (pictured below) finale so that we make sure you get the most out of your trip.

TT16-WHITE

10. Lots of ‘Bang For Your Buck’

Taking the time out to travel all the way to the Philippines for Tropical Think Tank is definitely an investment which is why we want to make sure we bring you as much value as we can. Our expert speakers deliver valuable content, mastermind groups with like-minded entrepreneurs allow you to brainstorm and plan for growth and capping off every night with the chance to network with attendees and speakers – all against a beautiful tropical backdrop, seals the deal!

These are just a few things that you can expect to gain from attending a week-long event of business, networking and fun under the sun. Don’t miss your chance to take part in a game-changing week for your business – even though tickets have only been on sale for a few weeks, we’re almost sold out.

Using the Power of ‘Batching’ to Boost Your Daily Productivity

batching-productivity

“Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have 24 hour days” – Zig Ziglar

This quote usually puts things in perspective for me, especially when I find myself trying to focus and get work done. As entrepreneurs, it can be all too so easy to be bogged down by the daily distractions of running a business – especially one that’s online.

And as an online business owners you must be doing everything to boost your daily productivity, and maximize your time ‘at work’.

How many times have you answered an unexpected Skype call, or attended an impromptu meeting and found yourself with barely anything checked off your to-do list by mid-afternoon, because you’ve been ‘pulled’ towards the bells and whistles of Facebook , or Twitter?

It’s these little distractions that can cause you to lose focus and they also make it difficult for you to shift gears and restart a task all over again.

This is why I am such a huge fan of batching tasks. Now, this isn’t a new concept, this has been around for quite a while under different other names like the Pomodoro Technique, batch processing, etc.

However, by using this time-management strategy, you’ll be able to boost your daily productivity and take everything you’re doing to the next level, as it’ll get you clearing out those large chunks of work, such as recording podcast episodes, getting to email inbox zero and creating new blog content, in just a few hours – instead of hopping on and off the task over a period of days, or even worse… weeks!

In this video, which was recorded live as I presented training on this topic, via Periscope, you’ll see me deep dive into lots of different ways you can use batching to become uber productive.

It doesn’t matter what the task is, batching has definitely changed the game for me.

Not just by increasing my productivity levels, but becomes I’m more focused when I’m working, it’s also increased my free time – which means a three-day weekend (I haven’t worked a Friday for over 3-years!) that I can devote to some quality family time.

It’s this focus on learning how to boost your daily productivity as an entrepreneur that you should be consistently working on. It’s a cycle that should never end. There are only so many hours in each day, and we should never get too busy making a living that we forget to make a life.

Enjoy this video training? I’d love to hear from you. Please drop me a tweet, or a quick message on my Facebook Page!

And, as always, if you know someone that might benefit from this post, please do share it with them – they won’t be mad at you for providing them value. Promise!

7 ‘Must Listen’ Podcast Episodes for Personal Brand Entrepreneurs

personal brand entrepreneur podcasts

If you’re anything like me, and the majority of the members of our Youpreneur Community, the chances are that you’re an entrepreneur that’s on the go a lot of the time.

Traveling to speak at live events, holding workshops, doing book tours, interviews for press, visiting coaching clients – all that time adds up. Which is fine, it comes with the territory. However, what isn’t fine is if we’re wasting that time by watching movies on the plane, or snoozing in the back of the taxi.

Thanks to the world of podcasts, we can utilize this time to our advantage by tuning into great, free content that’ll help us incrementally move the needle, when it comes to our personal brand and business growth.

With this in mind, I decided to put together this quick list of seven of the best episodes of Youpreneur.FM, along with highlighting what you can expect to gain from tuning into them, on your next trip! Enjoy.

3. How to Convert Your Podcast Listeners into Email Subscribers (and Paying Customers!)

7. How to Avoid Entrepreneurial Burnout When Building a Personal Brand

Nothing, and I do mean NOTHING… is more important than taking care of ourselves as we focus on building our brand focused business. The problem is we routinely forget that fact, and here I discuss how we can re-focus and avoid hitting burnout – LISTEN NOW!

‘Listening’ is Just The Beginning!

Now, I will say that in the past I’ve been guilty of sitting down and listening to a podcast episode, expecting to learn lots – actually do so… and then doing nothing about it!

Not anymore, I assure you.

As a personal brand entrepreneur myself, I’ve now started taking instant action on what I learn from my podcast consumption time – be it by actually doing something myself, making really in-depth notes and saving them (along with calendar alerts) to act on in the new future, or perhaps by delegating something to one of my virtual staff. Either way – I take action.

That’s what YOU need to do, too – it moves the needle. It gets things happening… and that’s the difference between us truly GROWING our brands and businesses and not. So, promise me you’ll take some action after you tune into some of the shows above, okay?!

What did you think of this post? I’d love to hear from you. Please drop me a tweet, or a quick message on my Facebook Page! And, as always, if you know of someone that might benefit from seeing this, please do share it with them, I’d appreciate it.

The 10-Step Small Business Website Checklist [Infographic]

Nowadays everything is instant – instant messaging, instant results, instant gratification – catching the attention of a new visitor / customer has never been more challenging. These days you barely have a minute (actually, it’s about 6-seconds, I believe!) to prove to your visitors that your website is worth sticking around for, which is why creating a strong first impression is crucial.

However, convincing them to stay and take a longer look involves a lot more than just a well designed site.

You need to have the fundamentals for a small business website in place, to make sure your visitors take your site and what it has to offer, seriously – and that they take the action you want them to take, when visiting. Once you have them in place, that’s where the real fun starts and you can begin to tweak your site and test it out to see what works for you and your audience!

There are so many strategies and techniques you can use to capture their attention, though it’s always important to make sure you cover the basics.  To make sure you have all the essentials covered, check out this ten-step small business website checklist for your small business website.

website-checklist-infographic

As you build out your site, you don’t need all the bells and whistles to convince visitors to stay – a simple and clean site can work just as well as a fancy-looking one. It will all come down to your content and what you have to offer.

Based on some of the topics mentioned in this infographic, here are a few more resources I’ve produced for you to delve into in a little more detail. I hope they turn out to be helpful for you.

  • My guide to launching a podcast successfully.
  • My tips and tactics for working with a virtual assistant to manage social media.
  • My video training on producing a high-converting optin offer for your site.

Why Every Entrepreneur Should Invest in a Stand-Up Desk

stand-up-desk

What if you burned out, and put in place a one year goal to remove yourself from your business completely?

What if, after achieving that goal and enjoying a couple of years of entrepreneurial freedom, you ended up in hospital with a blown L5-S1 disc in your lower back, along with the fact that you needed invasive spine surgery that was going to have you on the operating table for 6-hours and facing a recovery period of 6-months, to a year… to fix it?

Well, welcome to my life!

All that happened to me in 2012, and I’m happy to say I came out on top of it all with a fixed back and a new focus on health and wellness.

During my recovery I started researching into stand-up desks. I had heard of them before, and even knew of a couple of people that were already using them, but, I had never tried one for myself – how I wish I’d decided to invest in a stand-up desk years back (pun intended!), as it probably would have saved me from needing surgery.

The importance of looking after our health as entrepreneurs is often swept under the rug. Ignored. Pushed to one side.

It shouldn’t be that way.

I invested in a stand-up desk shortly after my recovery period had come to an end and I ‘graduated’ from physiotherapy – it was one of the best moves I’ve made towards living a healthier lifestyle as an entrepreneur, and it’s one I wanted to introduce to you, properly, so that you can perhaps give it a serious thought.

My Personal Stand-up Desk Gear

Now, I agree that we all have different tastes when it comes to things like furniture – especially when it’s in our home.

However, I thought a suitable place to start ‘showing’ you these desks would be to simply show you mine. And not just the desk – the full ‘set up’ that I’ve adopted with the main component – the standup desk itself.

desk full shot

desk side shot

The Desk

The one I have is the MultiTable Adjustable Height Standing Desk with Manual Base. This is the base only, which means its totally customizable. I picked a smooth table top with a slight design to it, but I know several other business owners that have this and just picked up a simply desk top from Ikea for next to nothing. It’s super easy to put together, and just as easy to operate.

As you can see from the side view image above, there is plenty of room on the desk to work in comfort and I find that standing also gives me a slight ‘birds eye view’ of the desk and therefore helps me keep it cleaner and less cluttered!

desk mat

The Mat

An additional, important part of my personal set-up is the standing mat that I use. Mine is the Imprint Comfort Mat Nantucket Series and helps with supporting my foot arches (I have high ones!), as well as easing any back and neck fatigue. This is the perfect addition to when you decide to invest in a stand-up desk. I thoroughly recommend you get a mat if you go down this route – it makes the transition so much easier, and just feels great – in, or out of shoes!

desk chair shot

And… The Chair

Obviously, I’m not standing all day long. The chair I have in my home office (I also have the exact same chair in my company HQ, too – it’s that good!) is the ErgoHuman ME7ERG Black Mesh Executive Chair w/ Headrest. I use it for around 30% of my working day… the rest of the time I stand.

What if (lack of) Office Space is an Issue?

I’ve been around enough startup’s and entrepreneurs to know that sometimes space is a constraint – especially if they’re working from home. If you’re working in a small environment, you can try grabbing a mini stand-up desk.

The one I like the look of is this one from X-Elite Pro. It fits a laptop perfectly, along with space for a mouse and additional bits and pieces, too. However, the really cool thing about this desk is that it folds up, so you can really save space.

Another couple of cool resources for standup desks are:

  • This great article on Lifehacker
  • The brilliant selection of standup desks from the guys over at Varidesk
  • These sweet dsigns from the team at Updesk

No matter what way you decide to go with getting a standup desk into your office, the fact that you’ll be doing it is all that really matters.

I love my standup desk and wouldn’t be with it now – and I’m pretty sure that you’ll feel the same way, too!

What did you think today’s post? I’d love to know. Please tweet me, or drop me a message on Facebook. If you have entrepreneurial friends that you think could do with this post as a resources, please share it with them. I’d greatly appreciate it!
