7 ‘Must Listen’ Podcast Episodes for Personal Brand Entrepreneurs

August 2, 2016 by Chris Leave a Comment

personal brand entrepreneur podcasts

If you’re anything like me, and the majority of the members of our Youpreneur Community, the chances are that you’re an entrepreneur that’s on the go a lot of the time.

Traveling to speak at live events, holding workshops, doing book tours, interviews for press, visiting coaching clients – all that time adds up. Which is fine, it comes with the territory. However, what isn’t fine is if we’re wasting that time by watching movies on the plane, or snoozing in the back of the taxi.

Thanks to the world of podcasts, we can utilize this time to our advantage by tuning into great, free content that’ll help us incrementally move the needle, when it comes to our personal brand and business growth.

With this in mind, I decided to put together this quick list of seven of the best episodes of Youpreneur.FM, along with highlighting what you can expect to gain from tuning into them, on your next trip! Enjoy.

1. The Business of YOU: Why Building Your Brand is Paramount to Success

When it comes to creating a business with long-term in mind, there’s nothing better than focusing on building it around you, your experiences and how you can best serve your clients and community. This episode is the perfect overview of the ‘no competition economy’, as I like to call it – LISTEN NOW!

2. How to Build Your First ‘Real’ Email Marketing Funnel

This is so important, that I feel like we should discuss it on every episode! My good friend, Greg Hickman (who personally manages a lot of my marketing online) joins me to break down exactly, step-by-step how we can grow a high converting email marketing funnel – LISTEN NOW!

3. How to Convert Your Podcast Listeners into Email Subscribers (and Paying Customers!)

One of the easiest ways to build a brand online is to start your own podcast. However, getting listeners is just the beginning. In this episode with Tim Paige we deep dive into strategies (a lot of ’em!) that’ll take your listeners on a zero-friction journey to become email subscribers – LISTEN NOW!

4. How to Launch and Grow a Membership Site

In this episode I sit down with bestselling author, Robbie Kellman Baxter to discuss the ‘membership economy’ and why, exactly, all personal brand entrepreneurs should be considering building a membership driven business, in order to bring insane value to those that follow them – LISTEN NOW!

5. How to Build Your Brand on Facebook and Beyond

This is a real goodie. In this episode I’m joined by Kimra Luna, who grew a massive following on Facebook in a very short space of time, and is now making well over seven figures, as a result. She drops some great strategies, you need to take note of – LISTEN NOW!

6. Top Tips on Understanding and Navigating the Branding Landscape

Here I’m joined by branding expert Karen Hardie and we talk all about the differences between big brand names and those building businesses around their personal brands. It’s a real eye-opener of an episode, with lots of insights from this seasoned professional – LISTEN NOW!

7. How to Avoid Entrepreneurial Burnout When Building a Personal Brand

Nothing, and I do mean NOTHING… is more important than taking care of ourselves as we focus on building our brand focused business. The problem is we routinely forget that fact, and here I discuss how we can re-focus and avoid hitting burnout – LISTEN NOW!

‘Listening’ is Just The Beginning!

Now, I will say that in the past I’ve been guilty of sitting down and listening to a podcast episode, expecting to learn lots – actually do so… and then doing nothing about it!

Not anymore, I assure you.

As a personal brand entrepreneur myself, I’ve now started taking instant action on what I learn from my podcast consumption time – be it by actually doing something myself, making really in-depth notes and saving them (along with calendar alerts) to act on in the new future, or perhaps by delegating something to one of my virtual staff. Either way – I take action.

That’s what YOU need to do, too – it moves the needle. It gets things happening… and that’s the difference between us truly GROWING our brands and businesses and not. So, promise me you’ll take some action after you tune into some of the shows above, okay?!

What did you think of this post? I’d love to hear from you. Please drop me a tweet, or a quick message on my Facebook Page! And, as always, if you know of someone that might benefit from seeing this, please do share it with them, I’d appreciate it.

10 Lessons Learned Writing My First Business Book [Infographic]

April 12, 2016 by Chris Leave a Comment

When I became an entrepreneur way back in 2004, the idea of writing my first business book to help budding entrepreneurs was always a huge, but distant goal that loomed in the back of my head whenever I sat down to plan out my long-term targets at the end of each year.

When I started blogging and podcasting in 2010 it became something that I thought more about, as my ‘work’ grew in popularity, and I came into contact with more like-minded entrepreneurs. Little did I know it was going to be the catalyst for my author dream to become a reality.

By the end of 2012 I received my first publishing offer!

I ended up not going with that initial offer, but it did make me re-think my goal of writing my first business book a little more seriously. Was I finally ready to put in the work and make it happen? Not too long after getting that first offer, I was introduced to a literary agent, and got straight to work on our first proposal. After sending the proposal to 16 publishing houses, I received four more offers – a buy-in rate of 25%… not bad for a first time author!

The rest, as they say, is history… We recently celebrated the second anniversary of Virtual Freedom, and I wanted to share some of the lessons I learned during my journey to getting published to anyone out there who might be planning on writing their own book in the future.

CHRIS-INFOGRAPHIC 6-5 (1) copy-page-001

In addition to this infographic, and staying on the same subject, you might want to listen to this episode of YoupreneurFM, where I delve into writing a book is one of the easiest and fastest ways to build a profitable online brand.

To take things to the next level, I strongly suggest that you also check out this episode of the podcast, too. This was a real goodie, where I’m joined with my good friend and New York Times bestselling author, Jay Baer to talk about how we can market our book all the way to the bestseller lists and beyond. It’s gold. Trust me.

One thing is for sure… writing a book aint easy! And it’s aint for everyone! But, if you’re focused on getting your word out into the world, it’s still, in my opinion, the best way to do just that and there are so many benefits to writing my first business book that I haven’t even touched on here – perhaps I’ll cover that on another infographic in the future!

Did this infographic help you? If so, please consider sharing it and be sure to tweet me and let me know your biggest takeaway!

How to Use a ‘Nano Podcast’ to Successfully Launch Your Next Big Thing!

May 5, 2014 by Chris 50 Comments

virtual freedom podcastI recently launched my first ever traditionally published book to the world.

It quickly became a #1 Bestseller in three separate business categories and climbed into the Top 150 Rank (hitting 133) of ALL books on Amazon.com – woot!

In short, the launch was a big success, selling thousands and thousands of copies in it’s launch week alone.

I did many things to skyrocket the initial (and on-going) success of Virtual Freedom, such as being a guest on every major entrepreneurial podcast, guest posting on some of the biggest blogs online, running a private Facebook group, mailing finished copies to major influencers (both on and offline), speaking engagements, building out a dedicated website for the book, and much, much more.

However, the one thing that I’m most proud of is deciding to publish podcast episodes directly and exclusively dedicated to the book, it’s message and the type of people that would be buying it, via a brand new, limited release podcast.

In this post I’m going to let you in on why I decided to do this, how I put it together, the execution involved to make it happen the right way, and results on how the podcast affected the initial launch success of the book itself.

How to Put Your Podcast on Auto Pilot

April 21, 2014 by Chris 90 Comments

podcast auto pilot

I’ve been podcasting since April 2010 and I can directly relate additional business, more profits, more connections, better community building and a host of other opportunities to that sheer fact that I’m actively engaging in this brilliant medium.

Just like a blog, I believe that every entrepreneur today should be podcasting. Truly, I do.

One of the main reasons a lot of people don’t pull the trigger on this, however, is because of the time it takes to produce regular podcast content. Today, I want to try and change that!

The following is the EXACT process I follow to put my podcast on auto pilot.

It’s so simple, anyone can follow it.

Step #1 – Creating Your Podcast Content

This is the one part of the process that you cannot hand off to anyone else. This is why people are going to tune in. They are going to tune in because of you.

podcast set-up

People want to hear your stories. Your experiences. They want / need your expertise. They want you. So, give it to ’em, okay!

And a quick note on equipment – you don’t need a pro set-up like the one I use, above. Just a simple mic and a quiet environment is all you need to get started.

Step #2 – Editing Your Podcast

Once I’ve created the raw content of my podcast, I dump the files into a Dropbox folder which is shared with my Podcast Editor VA. Typically there are two files:

  1. The bulk of the show – either an interview recording, or my solo presentation for that episode.
  2. My spoken intro – this is where I mention any special events, masterminds I might be doing, etc., it’s also where I read out recent reviews for the show, too.

My editor will then get to work splicing these files together with my pre-recorded intro and outro, and export everything as the final .mp3 file.

Step #3 – Tagging & Uploading Your Podcast File

As soon as my editor has finished the editing of the show he will upload the file into another Dropbox folder I share with my General VA (GVA).

podcast tagging

She will then tag the .mp3 file with the show’s artwork, and the episode information (image above), before uploading it to my audio server – I currently use Libsyn for the New Business Podcast and Soundcloud for the Virtual Freedom Podcast.

She’ll then forward on the URL of the uploaded file to my Show Note Editor VA.

Step #4 – Create Your Podcast’s Show Notes

Once my show note editor gets the URL, she’ll download the file and listen to it. At the same time she’ll be taking down notes on important parts of the show, as well as any mentionables, such as websites, videos, etc.

She’ll then use the file’s URL to embed the audio file into the show post (I use the BluBurry Powerpress plugin), select an image to go along with the podcast topic (image of the guest, for example), write intro and outro paragraphs, select a few main talking points from the session and list them down, embed any videos, list down all the websites, etc., and finally hit ‘Save Draft’.

She will then drop me an email letting me know that the post is ready for my approval.

Step #5 – Publishing Your Podcast

I’ll then log into WordPress, open the draft post and check it out. Once I’ve spent 10-minutes going over it, making any final tweaks, etc., I’ll either schedule it to go live at some point in the future (I currently have podcast content scheduled until June!), or simply hit publish.

Step #6 – Promoting Your Podcast

At this point my General VA will put together a quick ‘social image’ (pictured below), and post the image, along wit a quick description to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+ to spread the word.

NBP-Episode21

She will then log into my Aweber account and with a pre-written email that I’ve already given her, schedule a broadcast to go out to my subscriber list to alert them of the new content, too.

That’s it.

That’s my entire process for producing (and promoting) podcast material on a regular basis.

About The Team That Gets it Done!

I want to state very clearly that only one person in this entire process is employed with a full-time salary – my General VA – as she does plenty more for me, too.

Everyone involved has a copy of this process flow and follows it time and time again. It’s not broken, so nobody tries to fix it – it’s the process we simply follow to run the podcast on auto pilot.

It simply works.

I hope you’ve found this quick guide helpful, and I’d like to do more of these simple process posts for you, if you’d like to see them, of course?

Question: If there was ONE process you’d like to offload to virtual staff with the help of a simple post like this one, what would it be?

Mastermind Update: How One Entrepreneur Got Razor Focused, Launched a Podcast and Dominated an Entire Market!

October 29, 2013 by Chris 55 Comments

Bernd Geropp

Not so long ago, I featured one of my coaching clients here on the site, Fern Camacho. He attended my New York Mastermind in July this year and since then has been making some serious moves in his business.

There were so many positive comments on that post, that I decided to invite another of my mastermind tribe to come onto the site, and tell his story.

Enter Germany-based leadership coach and entrepreneur, Bernd Geropp.

I originally ‘met’ Bernd when he signed up for one of my coaching sessions last year. We then met in person at New Media Expo in January, and then he attended my London Mastermind, in May. Bernd is a guy that takes action, this is clear – but following the London session I had no idea just how much action he was going to take!

3 Content Marketing Tips That are So Easy to Follow, that They Actually WORK!

April 17, 2013 by Chris 44 Comments

content-marketing-tipsGetting involved with content marketing is one of the easiest ways to create a tribe of fans and followers online, which in turn helps you market your products and services, as well as help potential customers and clients by answering questions, providing support, etc.

I’ve already touched base on the subject on a couple of episodes of the New Business Podcast, with guests C.C. Chapman and Jay Baer. I’m also in the process of putting together a complete guide to working with virtual assistants to help you with the research, creation, publishing and marketing of content online – watch this space!

In today’s video I give you a few tips that have worked really well for me. I mean, this simplistic approach to content marketing REALLY DOES WORK. Check it out below, and please feel free to share it with your buddies if you like it!

13 Tips for Building a Remarkable Brand With a Podcast

April 4, 2013 by Chris 29 Comments

remarkable-brand-podcast

I recently published a post detailing the strategy I used to get ranked No.1 on iTunes in two different categories with a brand new podcast. It was a very well received post, and I felt it important to elaborate on this subject a little further.

That post focused on the HOW, in this post I’m going into the WHY.

In other words, why, as entrepreneurs in an increasingly active ‘P2P Economy’ (my philosophy for doing business in todays ‘people to people’ business world) we need to be podcasting in the first place – and how it helps to build our brand even further.

That’s my podcasting set-up, in the image above, right.

Podcasting allows us to realize the benefits of presenting information in audio or visual format. This in turn allows you to convey your personality in a much stronger way than is possible through the written word. That clarity in your message is seen and felt through your actions (on video) and the tone of your voice  – all allowing you to emphasize important points within the podcast session.

There are hundreds of millions of people walking around with smartphones, and all of these are podcast-enabled.

The evolution of small business marketing and the onslaught of podcasting as a medium which allows you to reach a far larger audience, has never been anymore blatant, let’s face it – everyone at it!

Podcast subscribers are after information, real life stories, case studies and advice from their peers, and those they follow. Building either your personal, or business brand with podcasting creates a huge viral affect for the brand, and can also generate lots of relevant links to your website.

Remember – you can’t personally be awake and in touch with your audience 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

However, your online brand can!

Podcasts are easy to create, portable, and users can listen to them at any time, anywhere. This is what makes building your brand with podcasting so beneficial, as it engages with people in all walks of life – no matter where they are. They may want to listen in the car, on a train, in the gym, or while working.

It’s time to jump on the podcasting bandwagon people.

13 Tips for Building Your Brand with Podcasting

1. Get started. Do not just sit by and watch the competition build their audience with great podcast content, while you twiddle your thumbs thinking ‘what if’. When you do get started, be sure you produce high quality, clean sounding audio.

2. Be unique. Successful brands speak with a unique voice. Check out these podcasts to see exactly what I’m talking about. Think about the brands you admire – what makes them unique? There must be a reason for people to listen to your podcast ahead of other similar shows. This will come down to whether they like your personality, topics covered and the method of delivery. Don’t be scared to be yourself.

3. Consider your audience. What do they want to hear about from you? You are creating the podcast for them (not yourself!) so think carefully about the topics they would like you to cover. Answer previous questions you have been asked, or the most common problems facing your business today as a starting point. The rest will come along naturally.

4. Be consistent. Stick to the schedule you decided – weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, people will want to know that every Tuesday, for example, that yoursite.com has a great new podcast session released for them to download and enjoy.

5. Have cool looking artwork. Professional looking art is an integral part of brand recognition and it’s no different when it comes to building your brand from podcasting. When using iTunes, the recommended specifications for the artwork that will be embedded on your RSS Feed is 300 x 300 pixels, in either JPG or PNG format. Keep your image the same across all channels of your online brand. This makes it easy to recognize you in search results – a perfect example is my podcast artwork.

6. Use tags on your iTunes submissions, and set-up your RSS Feed. This will help your podcast get found in the iTunes store easier, converting casual passers-by into subscribers, and ultimately, fans.

7. Reach out to other podcasters. This may seem like getting into bed with the competition, but really, you need to be as involved with your ‘competition’ as possible. This provides you with the opportunity to learn from them, hear what they are talking about, and as with mastermind groups, you may even get great ideas by listening to their podcasts.

Screen Shot 2013-04-04 at 11.16.14 PM

8. Promote your podcast everywhere. This means submitting your channel and RSS Feed to podcast directories not only in the iTunes store, but in other places like Zune Marketplace, Blackberry Podcast, Miro Guide, Stitcher, DoubleTwist and Blubrry. This is a new one for me, and I’ve already got featured on Stitcher – the rest are happening currently.

9. Go one step further – create your own App. One huge step forward would be to create an overall app for listeners to download. This would be automatically updated with your newest podcasts, blog posts and information about your business. After seeing the success that Pat Flynn has had with this model, I’m considering itself. Would you download and use a free ChrisDucker.com app, if I was to create it? Let me know in the comments.

10. Interview successful business owners. This could mean sit down interviews, recorded Skype conversations, or even a chat over coffee somewhere quiet. Have plenty of questions prepared and also some extra ideas for filler content. If you’re on location somewhere, make sure you’re both mic’d up well, so as to provide good quality audio to your listeners.

11. Be creative. Many businesses and entrepreneurs are experimenting with podcasting now and you need to be memorable, exciting and full of fresh ideas. This will include everything from the intro in your podcast, to your associated brand artwork, website design, as well as the use of social media. Be memorable.

12. Be sure to promote your other platforms. Utilize the opportunity to  mention your Facebook and Twitter profiles, as well as your blog or company website at some stage during your podcast. This gives you more ways to reach your audience and potentially generate more subscribers, listeners, revenue and grow your audience with viral sharing. Don’t overdo it though – it’ll become very ‘old’, very quickly.

13. Provide value and be remembered. Overall, this should be your number one focus. It’ll guarantee your brand will grow through podcasting. Once you establish yourself as a leader in your field, a go-to person, expert (whatever you want to call yourself!), listeners will keep coming back and downloading your podcast – as well as mentioning it their friends.

Not Considered Podcasting Yet? C’mon, Already!

As you can tell, I’m a big fan of podcasting.

Screen Shot 2013-04-04 at 11.16.51 PM

Thousands of people tune in to listen to me and my guests impart business knowledge every week. That is something you should not ignore. That many people, all with you injected into their earlobes! That is untouchable, as a brand builder.

It allows your readers and listeners to feel your personality, passion and hear your enthusiasm when you speak about your topic and business.

Podcasting is here to stay and creates a valuable element to building your online brand. Since it was added to the Oxford dictionary in 2005 – ‘Podcasting’ has grown to become a much bigger success than most believed it would be. I saw this with my own eyes in January this year, when I attended the Podcast Awards that were held at New Media Expo in Vegas. The room was literally not big enough for the crowd!

Getting started with a podcast will help build your brand in a whole different way, to a whole different audience. I hope this post has helped you see that a little.

So get out there and start your first podcast, if you haven’t done so already.

Got any questions on podcasting? Thinking about starting, but not pulling the trigger for some reason? Share ’em below, I promise to help in anyway I can!

PS. Thank you to those podcast reviewers seen in this post, and to anyone who has ever left an iTunes review and ratings for the New Business Podcast. I appreciate your support.

How to Get Your Podcast to No.1 in iTunes! (My Personal Launch Strategy)

March 9, 2013 by Chris 94 Comments

Podcast ImageWarning: This post is a little longer than most, includes statistics, numbers and a handful of images, too. If you get a nosebleed from reading it – don’t blame me!

On December 22, 2012 I launched The New Business Podcast here on the blog, with its iTunes listing popping up a week later, on December 29.

Since its launch I have been continually blown away by the download numbers, the tweets and other types of feedback and how it’s already started to shape my brand even further.

Imagine the look on my face when, after getting back from speaking at New Media Expo in Vegas, I logged into the US iTunes store to see how ranking was coming along, to discover I was in the No.1 spot in the New & Noteworthy section for both the ‘Business’ and ‘Management & Marketing’ categories – my two main focus categories.

Was I happy? Yes… Shocked? No… And today I’m gonna tell you why…

I’ve been knocked sideways by how fast some entrepreneurs create, launch and catapult a business to success in recent years.

They seem to be fully immersed in the New Business Manifesto way of life!

All you need to do is flick through the pages of Entrepreneur magazine, or tune into ‘Tech Stars’ on Bloomberg to see how the movers and shakers of the new economy are getting shit done in todays business world.

As an entrepreneur, it’s incredibly exciting to see!

So, I decided to go out and grab ahold of the people that are making a difference in what they are doing in the business world, and more importantly HOW they’re doing it. What follows, in no particular order, is their answers to one very simple question.
